Mental health and wellbeing has never been given much thought in the workplace and even outside of it.

 

Supporting others going through mental health challenges at work has never gotten the attention and focus it deserves.There exists a stigma surrounding mental health where it is seen as a weakness and people struggling with mental health challenges may be embarrassed, which makes open discussion about it either awkward or near-taboo. Without open and honest conversations, it makes getting the necessary support and treatment an immensely difficult endeavour. 


Fortunately, with the help of better understanding of what mental health and wellbeing is, today’s society is slowly coming to the realisation that mental health and wellbeing matters as much as physical health, and there are plenty of benefits to be had when the environment in the workplace is conducive to well-being.


Living through Covid since 2020 has shone a spotlight on mental health, and more and more companies are investing in an effective mental wellness program. This has made it easier for employees to get the support they need while also rewarding companies with a more engaged and motivated workforce.


This Guide for Managers  will provide you with an introduction to peer support in the workplace which will allow you to become a first responder to your peers in distress. However, keep in mind that this will not give you qualifications to be professional and you should always refer to experts when needed.

  • Mental health refers not only to the absence of mental disorders but also being in the optimum state that you can be in

  • The Mental Health Continuum explains that the states of mental health are not merely black or white. Rather, it’s more similar to a spectrum where there isn’t necessarily a clear boundary between mentally healthy and mentally ill

  • The first step of peer support is to identify your distressed peers, which can be done by looking for signs & symptoms and making sure it fits the criteria of change & consistency
